Meeting Minutes December 13, 2011

7:15pm-8:15pm

The focus of this meeting was on planning our 2012 club events, speakers, and trips.

Old Business

    1. The results of the poll on our website indicate that the best way to communicate club news such as meeting minutes and upcoming events is through reminder emails and facebook.  If you haven’t voted, please go to the website and vote.  Going forward, a reminder e-mail will be sent about a week before meetings and will include the previous meeting minutes and agenda for the next meeting.  Their will also be facebook updates before events and the website calendar will be kept current.
    2. The website administrators are working on setting up a members only page where club members names and e-mail addresses will be displayed if they would like.  This page would only be viewable by other members. In the meantime,  those who would like their information made public to club members will have their information listed at the bottom of the minutes.  Please contact Bridget if you would like to share your information.
    3. Some members plan on attending Beneath the Sea diving expo at the Meadowlands Expo Center on March 23-26.  Tickets are $26.  Please post in the forum if you would like to attend.
    4. Joe Pagano has offered to get information on setting up a tour of a hyperbaric chamber at a hospital here in NJ.  Thanks Joe!  We already have a healthy list of people who would like to go, so please post in the forum if this is something you would be interested in.
    5. The New Years Eve Day Dive at Dutch Springs will be from 11-2 on December 31.
    6. There has not been much interest in doing the Polar Bear Plunge as a club, though there was interest in going to watch/laugh at Farnaz and Bridget do it.
    7. Ken Katz is in negotiations with the Diveheart Organization for a possible guest speaker for the February 14th meeting.  (See November 9 minutes for details on Diveheart)

New Business

  1. Paul will try to set up open pool time for the club at Montclair State University for a Sunday in late January or early February.  Exact date coming soon.  A possible equipment demo was also discussed.  The pool time will be offered for a fee of $15 for members and will include gear rental.
  2. We will have a guest speaker, Dan Lieb, president of the NJ Historical Divers Association, at our January 10th meeting.  The NJHDA is a non-profit organization that has been credited with discovering, identifying,  and preserving numerous wrecks off of our coast. http://njhda.org/  Mr Lieb has written articles and provided illustrations for several magazines and books.  He has also been featured on an episode of the History Channels Deep Sea Detectives.  You can watch it at http://www.hulu.com/watch/313314/deep-sea-detectives-underwater-train-wreck  Mr. Lieb will be discussing where the NJHDA has been and where it is going.  By a show of hands, the club has agreed to invite non-members.  The club is also asking for a $10 donation from members and non-members in attendance.  This donation will be given to Mr. Lieb to cover his gas and tolls and to provide a donation to the NJHDA museum.
  3.  Who would be interested in diving the Manasquan or Shark River Inlet starting in May or for those dry suit certified, earlier?  This dive must be done at high tide and is for advanced divers only.  The inlets are about an hour and a half from Short Hills.
  4. Who would be interested in doing local boat dives?  We would like to reserve a boat before the beginning of the season because slots fill up quickly.  We will need to put down a deposit to reserve a boat.  Looking for input/suggestions on dates, boats, and possible dive locations.
  5. Would you be interested in attending a historical diving equipment demo day at Dutch Springs, where you can try on historical dive equipment?  Farnaz will look into dates.
  6. The club is planning a trip to Bonne Terre Mines in St. Louis, MO in April. Bonne Terre is the largest freshwater diving park in the country and has 24 ”dive trails” within the mine. The cost for the dives and accommodations range from $210-$420, depending on package chosen.  Charles has posted details in the Travel Committee forum.  If you are interested we will be taking a vote on the date at the next meeting.  If you would like to go, but will not be at the meeting please post the dates you would like to go in the forum.  We are considering the dates of 4/13-4/15 or 4/20-4/22.
  7. Clean Ocean Actions Beach Sweeps (clean-up) will be held on Saturday, April 21st.  There are many locations to choose from along the Jersey shore.  There will be a sign up sheet at the next meeting or you can post in the forum or contact Bridget.
  8. A list is being made for Paul of classes members would like to take and when.  So far interest had been expressed in Deep Diver, Enriched Air, Dry Suit, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Photography, Rescue Diver, and Rebreather.  Please post in the forums or contact the shop if there is a class you would like to take!
  9. Brian Esnes is going to Roatan, Honduras at the end of January if anyone would like to join him.

Welcome to our newest member, Tom!

Next club meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 10th
